Containers fell from ship in allision

Wed Mar 25 11:51:17 CET 2026 Timsen

On March 24, 2025, at 10.48 a.m. the 'Progres', 55790 ts (ENI: 02330688), enroute from Rotterdam to Karlsruhe, allided with a lifting bridge at Rhine kilometre 740 in port basin 4 of Neuss in pos. 51° 13' N 006° 42'. E. Initially, two containers fell into the water, and others were shifted. All of the lost boxes were empty. When the bridge was subsequently raised, two more containers were pushed in a controlled manner from the deck into the water. The wheelhouse of the 'Progres' was damaged too, while the crew escaped unscathed. After the allision, the crew helped to make the port of Neuss navigable again as quickly as possible. The fire department, personnel of the German Lifesaving Society (DLRG) and the water police were on site, and the crane ship 'Christine' was deployed to assist in clearing the port. The containers could be prevented from drifting downstream on the Rhine. A police helicopter surveyed the scene from the air but found no evidence of water pollution. The 'Progres' was moored near the accident site. At 5 p.m., the further response was handed over to the port master, and the rescue forces could be stood down. The bridge, which carries only the port railway, was closed to traffic, while it was inspected for damage. The bridge lifting mechanism was still functioning properly, which suggested that no major damage had occurred. Collision near Weurt

Tue Sep 26 09:17:55 CEST 2017 Timsen

On Sep 24, 2017, around 5.30 a.m. the "Oriana“, 5570 ts (EU-No.: 02330688) was in collision with the tank barge "Tinaco“, 1252 ts (ENI-No.: 06003053), on the Waal near Weurt. The tank barge was sailing river downstream and had just left the East Canal at Nijmegen when the container barge, which was coming from Nijmegen and was sailing towards Neuss, hit. Large areas of the hull of the "Tinaco" were torn up at starboard side when the larger ship hit. Luckily she was unloaded, otherwise an large scale oil spill would have been the consequence. The ship berthed in the East Canal port near Nijmegen after the accident. The "Oriana" which suffered by far less damage continued to Neuss, where she berthed on sep 25 at 6 a.m., before heading to Rotterdam, where she arrived at the Delta Container Services on Sep 26 at 7 a.m. Dutch report and photos: http://www.kustvaartforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7513&p=447165#p447152 https://www.schuttevaer.nl/nieuws/actueel/nid27365-grote-schade-na-aanvaring-bij-weurt.html
