Heavy load carrier sank after fire - crew safe

The 'Progress IV' caught fire, probably after a drone attack, while sailing within Romania's Exclusive Economic Zone on Aug 27, 2026, at 5.55 p.m., about 20 nautical miles southeast of Sfântul Gheorghe. Coast Guard border police were alerted by the MRCC Constanța and responded quickly. Within 20 minutes, rescue units were on scene. The SAR operation was coordinated by the patrol vessel 'MAI 0201', and other rescue vessels, such as the 'Arsvom', 'SAR Ares' and 'SAR Artemis' and the cargo m/v 'Mohamad B' (IMO: 9517020), which diverted on its voyage from Misurata to Galati, were mobilised. All 12 crew members were recovered alive, ten of them by Romanian border guards, and two others pulled from the water by the crew of the 'Mohamad B'. As of 8.47 p.m., all castaways were reported safe. One sailor had sustained injuries. The weather conditions in the area were difficult, with waves reaching heights of approximately 2.5 meters. The circumstances surrounding the incident and the party responsible were still under investigation.
