The ‘Prosperity’ left the north dike in the port of Algeciras under tow on Aug 24, 2019, to be broken up. The freighter, neglected by the owner since 2015, was sold at auction to the Turkish company Akcay Gemi Söküm Dennizcilik Sanayi Tivaret Limited Sirketi for 403,000 Euros in June. The "Prosperity" had arrived in port in spring of 2015 with 2,300 tons of ferrosilicon enroute to Italy. The Maritime Captaincy ordered the arrest after detecting 15 deficiencies, 12 of them very serious. The shipowner reported then that he could not face the sanctioning file or the arrangements, so he left the ship and its 11 crew members to their fate. The staff, after several months marked by hardships, had to be assisted by the ITF, Caritas, Red Cross and several service companies that donated food and water.
