Grounded tug claims more victims
Two minors have disappeared after entering the wreck of the 'Quan Tum' at the Costa Azul Beach on Dec 14, 2025, at around 5.30 p.m. while enjoying a summer day with their families in the Ventanilla district. The Civil Defense. have launched a search operation, after being alerted by the family of one of the young men, identified as 16-year-old Juan Emilio Sánchez Alvarado, when they failed to see him leave the vessel. The distance from the shoreline to the grounded vessel is at least 100 meters. The mayor of Ventanilla, Jhovinson Vásquez Osorio, was informed of the minors' disappearance and deployed the Peruvian National Police (PNP) and rescue teams. A helicopter was included in the search until late into the night, but, so far, their whereabouts have not been determined. Already in August, it was reported that a schoolboy drowned in similar circumstances after being pulled into a whirlpool near the ship. His body was never found. The 'Quen Tum' was towing the barge 'Guerrero' on Oct 11, 2023, when it broke lose and went adrift. The Peruvian Navy located the barge aground amid high swells on the Costa Azul beach. On Oct 13, in accordance with Official Letter No. 3173/21, the Port Captaincy of Callao ordered the Diving Services and Marine Construction to submit a plan for refloating and towing the barge by a company authorised by the General Directorate of Captaincies and Coast. On Oct 18, the authorisation was submitted for the salvage between Oct 22 and Nov 5, but the company that owned the barge failed to remove it. This led to more than two warnings from the Port Authority of Callao. On Nov 26, the Port Authority of Callao informed the company that it had not reported the grounding of the 'Quan Tum', nor the actions it was taking to remove the "Guerrero". On Nov 28, the Port Authority of Callao notified the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office of the Northwest Lima District Attorney's Office, via official letter 3733/23, for appropriate legal action. Since then, the offshore tug has sunk deep into the sand.
