No tender for Rapid
The tender held for the 'Rapid', which had been lying idle for a long time after running aground off the coast of the Kandıra district in Kocaeli—failed to yield a result as no buyers came forward. In the tender conducted by the Kefken Port Authority using the open bid method—in accordance with the provisions of the Ports Law No. 618 and the State Tender Law No. 2886—no bids were submitted for the ship, which had been put up for sale with an estimated value of approximately 7,411,754 Liras. The 'Rapid' had drifted and run aground on Sep 18, 2025, and had remained idle near Kefken Island since Nov 14, 2025. It has been reported that a decision regarding whether the ship would be put up for tender again will be finalised in the coming days, and that a sale via enforcement proceedings could also be considered within the scope of the ongoing legal process. Meanwhile, in a separate tender held on the same day by the Kocaeli Regional Port Authority, the Cameroon-flagged dry cargo ship 'Sefora', which had been lying idle in the Hereke Anchorage Area since May 5, 2023, and was put up for sale with an estimated value of 10,637,550 Liras, was purchased by the only company participating in the tender.
Insurance withdrew, procedures for sale of abandoned ship have commenced
The owner of the 'Rapid' has officially abandoned the 'Rapid', that ran aground off the coast of Kandıra district of Kocaeli on Nov 18, 2026. The ship was now waiting for the completion of the sale process in safe waters off Kefken Island, where it was towed after being refloated, and was now resting on the bottom in a semi-sunken state. The ship's insurance company fulfilled its obligations regarding the damages and withdrew from the process. Following this, the Kefken Port Authority initiated legal proceedings regarding the ship's future. Due to the ship flying the Tansanian flag, the port authority sent letters to the relevant authorities in the flag state, requesting that the ship be put up for sale and the proceeds used to pay public debts and liabilities. After receiving a positive response, procedures for the sale of the ship began. The proceeds from the sale were planned to cover the ship's debts and penalties. The wrecj in its present state did not pose an environmental risk. Report with photos: https://www.haberdenizde.com/denizde-gundem/rapid-satiliyor/
Pembe Port Authority tries to sell semi-sunken wreck
The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure organised the removal of 35 cubic meters of fuel from the 'Rapid' onto a workboat, which was moored alongside the grounded ship. The oil was pumped into small tanks, which were then transferred onto the smaller ship. There was no leakage into the sea at any stage of the process. As of Oct 1, the operation was successfully completed. On Nov 16, the ship was pulled to a sheltered area in Pembe Kayaliklari, where it remained semi-submerged since. The Pembe Port Authority was now trying to sell the abandobed wreck for disposal, after Tansania as flag state had given the permission, in an attempt to recover the costs which arose from tge accident.
