Indian Customs officials have detained the 'Reyfa' in Nhava Sheva, laden with 309 dry fruit containers for faking walnuts origin. The shipments, originating from Bandar Abbas, were suspected to have been misdeclared to be from Afghanistan to claim benefits under the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) agreement.Under SAFTA, imports from Afghanistan attract no or negligible customs duty, whereas goods from Iran were subject to full duty. One person has been arrested in connection with the case on Feb 16, 2026. The probe has revealed the duty evasion to the tune of ₹50 crore, The ship was detained with nearly 310 containers of dry fruit consignments originating from Bandar Abbas port at Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva port on the suspicion of the origin of consignments being “misdeclared”, after its arrival on Feb 1, 2026. Although import documents stated that all containers were loaded at Bandar Abbas, as Afghanistan does not have its own port, investigators were examining whether the country of origin stated for the dried fruits, particularly walnuts, was incorrect. The detention, for nearly a fortnight, followed specific information of misdeclaration of origin of the produce received by the Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). Though the port of loading for all containers has been given as Bandar Abbas, Indian officials were questioning the crew for more details.
