River cruise ship towed out of lock and repaired
The Kitzingen lock has reopened following the the allision of the "River Aria", after the ship has been towed out of the lock chamber and moored in the outer harbour. Fire fighters and the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) had spent a total of 15 hours on July 30, removing spilled fuel from the lock basin and cleaning the area. The passengers, who had been stranded, were picked up by bus on July 29 for an excursion, could remain on board the river cruise ship. Repairs of the two hull breaches were carried out on Aug 1, after which the ship was able to resume its journey and proceeded to Würzburg.
Allision in Kitzingen
The 'River Aria', sailing downstream on the Main enroute to Würzburg, allided with a lock wall in Kitzingen on July 30, 2026, at around 1:30 a.m., when entering the lock. The impact caused two leaks in the hull, including one in the diesel tank. Because the accident occurred inside the lock chamber, the diesel fuel only leaked into the lock chamber and did not enter the river. The fire department began containing the spill, and a specialised company was called in to assist. The cause of the accident was likely a navigational error by the captain. It was unclear whether and how the voyage could be continued. Report with photo: https://www.meincharivari.de/kitzingen-passagierschiff-havariert-in-schleuse-diesel-ausgelaufen-228843/
