Disabled vessel towed to Jersey

Wed Dec 08 17:31:10 CET 2021 Timsen

The 'River Trader', en route from Jersey to Emden with five crew members on board, called Mayday on Dec 7, 2021, at 5.25 p.m. after losing power in strong winds. The ship was anchored off the north coast of Jersey to shelter from the strong south-westerly winds when the propulsion systems failed. The RNLI all-weather lifeboat was launched to Bouley Bay and went on standby to provide reassurance to the vessel. At 9 p.m. the tug 'Duke of Normandy' was also deployed from St. Helier to stand-by the vessel overnight. The lifeboat was then stood down and returned to the St. Helier. In the morning of Dec 8, the 'Duke of Nprmandy' established a towing connecton to the River Trader and set course to St. Helier’s Victoria Pier, where the ship was berthed at 4 p.m. Report with photo: https://www.bailiwickexpress.com/jsy/news/cargo-ship-calls-mayday-after-losing-power-strong-winds/#.YbDctFAxnIU

The unloaded "River Trader" caused considerable damage when Docking in the port of Brake in the evening of Dec 3, 2012. The master was not used to the strong currents on the Weser, and his ship got out of control. First it smashed into a barge, next allided with the quay and finally scraped along the stern of the Liberian flagged cargo m/v "Bonita" (IMO: IMO:9231286), which was berthed at the South Pier and finally destroyed a wooden Pier on a length of five metres. The ship was detained at the North Pier after the accident.
