Freighter caused oil pollution in Kiel Canal lock

Tue May 26 18:28:09 CEST 2026 Timsen

The Northern Lock of the Kiel Canal in Kiel had to be closed to shipping for almost six hours on May 18, 2026, after the 'Rix Mariner', en route from Liepaja to IJmujiden, lost an oily liquid at approximately 1:40 p.m. A shimmering oil film was discovered on the water of the lock chamber, shortly after a shiphad docked. Since four ships were in the lock, officers initially had to proceed by process of elimination. However, they were quickly able to identify the "Rix Mariner" as the source. The exact pollutant could not be identified. The oily substance spread over an area of approximately 60 by 50 meters in the lock chamber at the stern of the ship. The fire brigade Kiel and the State Agency for Coastal Protection, responsible for environmental matters, were deployed to the scene. After lengthy deliberations, it was determined that the amount of oil spilled was not requiring an intervention, and therefore the lock could continue operating. Shortly after 7 p.m., the four ships were allowed to leave the lock chamber. While three ships were permitted to continue their westbound canal transit towards Brunsbüttel, the "Rix Mariner" had to proceed to the North Harbour and docked at the Voith Quay for further investigations at 5.10 p.m. UTC, where the crew had to address the cause of the oil leak at the stern. An oil boom was laid out around the stern of the vessel. Officers from the water police station initiated criminal proceedings on suspicion of water pollution and were investigating the source of the contamination. Only once the damage has been repaired, the "Rix Mariner" would be allowed to continue its voyage from Liepaja to Amsterdam. It remained stationary as of May 20. The lock itself sustained no damage. During the investigations, the southern lock was used by shipping as an alternative. On May 21 the 'Rix Mariner' left Kiel again and finally arrived in Amsterdam on May 24.
