British frigate monitored troubled Russian submarine in English Channel

Tue Oct 14 12:01:07 CEST 2025 Timsen

The HMS 'Iron Duke' monitored the Russian submarine 'Novorossiysk' and its support tug 'Yakov Grebelsky' along with vessels of five other nations as it passed through the English Channel while surfaced. 11 warships from six nations coordinated to continuously locate and track the Russian vessels as they passed through the Mediterranean into the English Channel. Over the course of 72 hours the Royal Navy ship, working closely with a Wildcat helicopter tracked the Russian vessels as they sailed through the Channel and into the North Sea. The frigate monitored the ships near the French coast, close to the island of Ushant at the entrance to the English Channel. The 'Novorossiysk', which belongs to the 4th Separate submarine Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet, had run into serious technical problems on Sep 26, while on a mission off Gibraltar, in the Mediterranean. It was allegedly at risk of exploding and later surfaced. Due to a technical failure, fuel had been leaking into the bilge. The shortage forced the crew into the precarious decision of pumping the leaking fuel directly into the sea. The boat had neither the spare parts nor the qualified specialists onboard to fix the malfunction. A French Navy frigate had conductied surveillance of the Russian submarine while it off the coast of Brittany on Oct 9. The Russian Black Sea fleet claimed that the 'Novorossiysk' was simply on a planned voyage and sailing on the surface because that would be he rule in the busy Channel. The NATO claimed this was completely untrue. The 'Novorossiysk was limping to its home base and ikely diesel fuel had leaked into the lower compartments after a critical system failure. The boat was then followed en route by navies including the Spanish, American, French, Belgian, British, and, in recent days, the Dutch navy. On Oct 13 it entered the Skagerrak, afte rthe German surveillance ship 'Oste' monitoreed the submarine west of Heligoland. With the withdrawal of the 'Novorossiysk', Russia no longer has a single submarine in the Mediterranean. At the end of 2024, Russia still had an entire naval fleet there. Due to poor maintenance, logistical overload, and a susceptibility to accidents, this has quickly deteriorated, Reports with photos: https://www.kn-online.de/schleswig-holstein/russisches-u-boot-novorossiysk-erreicht-ostsee-nato-beobachtet-XQTEO6AVV5FIZHVOPZKQFPXFKM.html https://www.schuttevaer.nl/nieuws/actueel/2025/10/11/marineschip-en-een-helikopter-hielden-kapotte-russische-onderzeeboot-in-de-gaten/ https://www.schuttevaer.nl/nieuws/actueel/2025/10/14/navo-russische-onderzeeboot-heeft-kritiek-systeemdefect/ https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/nato-tracks-surfaced-russian-submarine-off-france/ https://www.gbc.gi/news/russian-submarine-reportedly-near-the-strait-at-risk-of-explosion https://x.com/NATO_MARCOM/status/1976325370908426672

Piracy drama off Bahrain discovered

Sat Aug 20 14:57:11 CEST 2011 arnekiel

A British warship opened fire to deter what was thought to be an Iranian boat on a suicide mission off the coast of Bahrain in April, it has been revealed. Sailors onboard HMS Iron Duke were "concerned the small boat is packed with lethal explosives", the UK's Daily Mail reported yesterday, Gulf Daily reported. "Dramatic video footage shows a speedboat crewed by at least two men powering parallel to the 4,900-tonne warship as it patrolled off the coast of Bahrain," the newspaper said. The British ship fired warning machine-gun rounds into the sea before the vessel turned around and sped away. "Military experts said it had 'all the appearances' of previous incidents when the Iranian Revolutionary Guard has used boats and planes to buzz Western warships to provoke a response," says the newspaper. http://www.gulf-daily-news.com/NewsDetails.aspx?storyid=312091
