Rona sank in Caspian Sea

Fri Jan 16 12:50:49 CET 2026 Timsen

The 'Rona', with 14 crew members on board, caught fire and sank n the Caspian Sea on Jan 14, 2026, enroute to Astrakhan. Turkmen rescue units received a distress signal from the vessel and promptly launched an SAR operation. The crew of Iranian and Indian nationality, was safely taken ashore to receive medical assistance and complete immigration and security procedures, indicated the Turkmen authorities involved in the operation. The Turkmen authorities announced that they were continuing their investigation and cooperated with Iran to clarify what happened and determine the fate of the sunken vessel. The ship had made multiple voyages between Iranian and Russian ports in the preceding months. This route coincides with the main maritime corridor used for transporting Iranian arms to Russia. The 'Rona' had called at the ports of Astrakhan, Makhachkala and Azov 20 times between Oct 2024 and Dec 2025. It sailed there from the Iranian ports of Amirabad and Anzali. Regarding the cause of the sinking, speculation has quickly turned to Ukraine's long-range strike drone forces.
