Allision in Wilhelmshaven delayed delivery of newbuilding

Tue Sep 22 16:24:46 CEST 2026 Timsen

On Sep 15, 2026, at 10:20 a.m., the 'Ronja Ruteplate', still operating under the shipyard's flag, allided with the central pier (known as the Nassau Bridge), while maneuvering to dock in the tidal harbour. The newbuilding sustained minor damage to its starboard side with a dent at the stern. The mountings on the bridge structure were damaged too. The central bridge had to be temporarily closed to traffic. An initial order prohibiting the vessel from proceeding was lifted following an inspection by the water police. The 'Ronja Ruteplante' subsequently set course for Bremerhaven, where the damage was repaired at the fishing harbour, allowing initial trials to be carried out. The scheduled handover of the "Ronja Ruteplante" to the Lower Saxony State Department for Waterway, Coastal and Nature Conservation (NLWKN) was expected to be delayed by one to two weeks due to the incident. The water police Wilhelmshaven stated that a technical defect had been ruled out as the cause of the accident, meaning further questioning of the vessel's master was still required. They also informed the Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation (BSU) and the BG Verkehr (Department of Ship Safety). The amount of damage was not yet known, and the investigations were ongoing.
