Philippines ferry ran aground off Occidental Mindoro
On Sep 17, 2026, at around 12.45 a.m., the 'RoRo Master 5' ran agrounded off Occidental Mindoro with 80 passengers and 24 vehicles on board, enroute from the Port of Batangas to the Port of Abra de Ilog in Occidental Mindoro. The vessel struck the seabed 30 meters from the shoreline of Barangay Udalo, Abra de Ilog. The Philippine Coast Guard promptly arrived at the site and boarded the vessel to evacuate the passengers. Four liferafts and a lifeline were secured towards the shoreline and used for evacuation operations. Rescue personnel carried at least one female passenger who appeared to be unconscious ashore. Seven of those rescued were children, four were senior citizens, 92 adults, and 14 students. Some of them were allowed to go home while the drivers and helpers of rolling cargoes were still at the port waiting for the recovery of the ship from the area.By 6 a.m. the evacuated passengers were brought to the port of Abra de Ilog. No marine pollution and no water ingress were reported. The initial investigation indicated that the vessel ran aground after it suffered a gyrocompass failure and diverted from its intended course. The vessel operator, Orange Navigation Inc., contracted a tug from the Cedar Company to refloat the ferry. Divers were expected to inspect the bottom of the vessel to determine the extent of damage. The Coast Guard and the Abra de Ilog local government have established an incident command post to coordinate the response.
