Patrol boat deployed to burning yacht off Urk

On Aug 2, 2026, the KNRM Station Urk was urgently alerted to an explosion and fire on board a sailing yacht, located about 15 minutes' sailing distance from the coast. In addition to the KNRM Station Urk,the KNRM Station Enkhuizen, the Urk Fire Department, multiple ambulances, the trauma helicopter, and a Coast Guard helicopter were also alerted. Two people had been thrown overboard by the explosion, while the sailing yacht was on fire. The plume of smoke was visible from a great distance. The RIB 'Marinus Cornelis' was immediately dispatched ahead. One of the victims had already been pulled from the water by a passing vessel. A KNRM crew member was put on board this vessel to provide immediate medical assistance. The other victim was still in the water, clinging to a bystander's boat. This person was taken aboard by the crew of the 'Marinus Cornelis' and rushed to KNRM Station Urk. Ambulance personnel and the Mobile Medical Team were standing by there to take over care. Subsequently, the individual on board the passing vessel was also transferred to the lifeboat 'Kapiteins Hazewinkel'. A medical responder was dropped off on board the lifeboat from the Coast Guard helicopter to provide additional medical care en route. This victim was also urgently taken to KNRM Station Urk and handed over to the ambulance there. Both were transported to the hospital. Despite the efforts of the 'RWS 25' of Rijkswaterstaat and a local salvage company, the burning sailing yacht ultimately sank.
