Sand rescued 21 seafarers from attacked tanker MKD Vyom
On March 2, 2026, at 11:10 a.m., the Vietnamese Maritime Rescue Center, received information from the Phuong Dong Petroleum Transport Co., Ltd., the owner of the 'Sand' , that the ship had successfully located and rescued 21 crew members from the tanker 'MKD Vyom' (IMO 9284386), among them one Ukrainian, four Bangladeshi, and 16 Indian nationals. On March 1, 2026, at 9.50 a.m., the 'MKD Vyom', enroute from Ijmuiden to Ras Tanura with 22 crew members on board, had been struck by a projectile above the waterline in the engine room, about 44.4 nautical miles northwest of Muscat off the coast of Oman, causing damage above the waterline and water ingress as well as a fire in the engine room. One crew member, who was working in the engine room, was killed. The 'Sand' had initially been sailing from India to Iraq to load oil. While the ship was in the Gulf of Oman, about 120 nautical miles from the Strait of Hormuz, it received reports of the escalating conflict in the Middle East on Feb 28. The vessel, with 23 Vietnamese crew members on board, was instructed not to enter the strait and instead head toward a safer area in the Indian Ocean. On March 1 at 2 p.m. LT, while still in the Gulf of Oman, en route to the Indian Ocean, the captain of the 'Sand' received a distress call reporting a fire aboard the 'MKD Vyom', about 40 nautical miles away. Crew members on the vessel were attempting to extinguish the fire, but the blaze continued to spread. The ship was carrying 61,000 tons of gasoline and was en route from the port of IJmuide to Saudi Arabia. Captain Bui Duc Tuan immediately informed the Orient Petroleum Transport about the situation and contacted the 'MKD Vyom' captain to confirm the vessel's position. After receiving approval from company leadership, he decided to change course and head to the rescue. All the Vietnamese crew members agreed to this. At the time, several vessels in the area had received the distress signal from the 'MKD Vyom'and from Oman’s maritime rescue authorities, but only the 'Sand' confirmed it would respond. After six hours of unsuccessful firefighting, the crew of the 'MKD Vyom' abandoned ship in two lifeboats. Navigating through the night, the 'Sand' followed intermittent VHF signals from the stranded sailors. When the ship was about two nautical miles away, Tuan spotted lights from the lifeboats and quickly maneuvered closer. Weather conditions were favourable, with clear skies and calm seas aiding the rescue effort. At 10 p.m., the first lifeboat carrying eight sailors reached the port side of the 'Sand'. Crew members lowered ladders and used cargo cranes to bring the survivors aboard.By nearly midnight, a second lifeboat carrying 13 sailors arrived and they were also safely brought on board. All 21 sailors from the 'MKD Vyom', the Ukrainian captain, four Bangladeshi sailors, and 16 Indian crew members. It was confirmed that the vessel was safe and that the rescued crew members were in stable condition. The center also proactively informed and coordinated information with the Oman MRCC, instructed the crew of the 'Sand' to maintain contact, carry out the necessary procedures with the Muscat Port Authority, and closely monitored the vessel's voyage. The handover of the castaways was carried out in accordance with international maritime SAR regulations in the Port of Muscat. The ship received assistance from the Muscat Port Authority with entry formalities. The 'Sand' has since left the Gulf of Oman and proceeded to a safe area in the Indian Ocean while awaiting new cargo instructions. However, the crew remained uneasy as they occasionally heard drones flying overhead. The ship has strengthened watch duties at the bow, bridge wings, and during nighttime hours to detect unusual objects and respond quickly to potential threats.
