200-million Euro-ship still facing technical problems
The 'Scharhörn', which was commissioned in April 2026, is still barely operational, as it was experiencing technical problems. According to the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV), the highly complex systems of the ship were still causing problems. The engines, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), and other systems still needed adjustments, which has been happening since its commissioning four months ago. As a consequence, the 'Scharhörn' has not yet been fully operational as planned. According to the Central Command for Maritime Emergencies in Cuxhaven, the vessel is not yet available for maritime emergency preparedness. The federal government has chartered emergency tugs, and an oil spill response vessel has been reassigned, as the 'Scharhörn' was only available for certain emergency situations. Further test runs were scheduled for the new vessel in the 34th week, and the 'Scharhörn' should then be basically ready for deployment'. The vessel, however, did not yet have a permanent berth in Kiel, because the buoy depot of the Waterways and Shipping Authority in Kiel-Holtenau was too small, after the construction plans were changed, and for the time being the ship had to be moored at the Kiel East Bank Port.
