Tanker got in distress off Paradip
The 'Seagull 9', enroute from Kuching, issued a distress call off Paradip on Sep 28, 2026. The ICGS 'Vishwast' came to assist the unstable chemical tanker, which was carrying 9,000 tons palm oil as cargo and had 23 crew members on board. The ship's damage control team boarded the ship, braving high-risk conditions, deployed submersible pumps, de-watered flooded ballast tanks, sealed two damaged seawater pipelines and contained a third fractured line. The vessel was stabilised sufficiently to be towed to port for repairs. The tug 'Dolphin', which was dispatched by the Paradip Port authorities, took the 'Sea Gull 9' in tow and pulled it to a secure anchorage off Paradip for further repairs and assessment. An ICG aircraft surveyed the area and reported a sheen of oil trailing the vessel. The sheen was presumed to have been a palm-oil leak; it had dissipated by Sep 28. The tanker entered the harbour on minimum engine power and was safely berthed. The vessel had a clean port state control detention record. The last inspection in Kuching in March showed four deficiencies, however, which were related to the firefighting equipment and appliances, maritime security, cleanliness, noise and vibration.
