Allision in Chittagong
On Aug 14, 2026, at 12.25 p.m., the 'Sea Spike' carrying 33,000 metric tons of diesel, allided with the anchored bulk carrier 'Sun Shine' (IMO: 9405435), loaded with imported 52,000 tonnes of wheat, which was moored in pos. 22° 17' N 091° 43' E in Chattogram, after the tanker lost control due to strong tidal currents. The cargo tanks remain fully intact, and there has been no oil spill. The impact caused a one-square-meter crack on the port side of the tanker’s engine room. The resulting water ingress caused a temporary power blackout, though emergency batteries keptthe vessel's VHF communication systems online. To stabilise the ship, crews released 10 shackles of anchor cable, ensuring the vessel would float safely even during low tide. It was moored in pos. 22° 18' N 091° 44' E. The Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) tug 'Kandari 8' (IMO: 9094353) was deployed to the site to provide rescue and logistical assistance. Upon receiving information routed through the Chattogram Port Authority’s Vessel Traffic Management Information System (VTMIS), the Bangladesh Coast Guard dispatched a rescue team deployed under Operation 'Surokkha'. The team, uutilising the Coast Guard vessel BCGS 'Sonadia' (MMSI: 405000208) the tug BCGT 'Promotto' (IMO: 9868998) and a high-speed patrol boat, carried out emergency containment and rescue efforts. The 'Sonadia' went alongside the damaged tanker to maintain continuous monitoring, communication, and swift response capabilities for any further emergencies. The authorities have directed the shipping agent to unload the fuel of the tanker as quickly as possible, and instructed a salvage company to repair the hull breach. The tanker’s shipping agent, Pride Shipping, had hired a salvage company for the repairs, which started work while the vessel remained at its mooring. Continuous communication was maintained with the ship's master. Shipping traffic in the port channel remained unaffected by the incident. A formal investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the allision was launched. The 'Sun Shine' jhad sustained minimal damage and was moved from the site on Aug 14.
