Italy must pay compensation to Sea Watch
Italy must pay compensation to the German aid organization Sea-Watch, whose "Sea-Watch 3" was impounded in the port of Lampedusa in 2019, according to a court ruling from Feb 18. A court in Palermo ruled that Italy must pay the NGO €76,000 for the "unjustified detention." The "Sea-Watch 3" docked in Lampedusa in June 2019, despite a ban by the Italian government, after being held at sea for two weeks with dozens of migrants on board. It rammed a police boat while entering the port and was subsequently impounded for five months. The captain, Carola Rackete, was arrested after the incident, but the proceedings against her were dropped in 2021. According to the ruling, the ministries of the interior, transport and economy, as well as the authorities in Sicily, must pay the sum for the aid organization and the court costs.
