Fire in Greifswalder Oie
A fire broke out on the 'Seeadler' in the emergency harbour of Greifswalder Oie southeast of Rügen island, on the early afternoon of Sep 26, 2026. At approximately 2:20 p.m., a deckhand from the excursion vessel reported that the bridge console had caught fire, likely due to a short circuit, to the sea rescue station on Greifswalder Oie, about six nautical miles from the mainland. He had initially brought the situation under control using a fire extinguisher, but requested assistance in case the fire flared up again. The passenger vessel had previously brought around 50 people to the island for a visit, lasting a few hours, and was moored in the local emergency harbour, just a short distance from the lifeboat. The crew of the 'Seeadler' had guided the guests across Greifswalder Oie themselves, as usual. However, the deckhand had returned to the ship and noticed flames on the bridge. A suspected short circuit had started the passenger vessel's main engine. The constant of the lifeboat 'Berthold Beitz', stationed on the island, quickly proceeded to the site. To prevent a worse outcome, he quickly closed the emergency shut-off valves to cut the fuel supply to the propulsion system and starve any potential fire of fuel. Together with the other two crew members of the 'Berthold Beitz', he secured the engine room. A few minutes later, a DRF air rescue helicopter—which had been alerted in the meantime—arrived on the island. Since the passengers and the captain had not been on board when the fire broke out, they did not require medical attention. However, the deckhand was flown to a hospital as a precaution to rule out smoke inhalation. Three lifeboats, the 'Klaus-Georg Butenschön' if the DGzRS station Zinnowitz, the 'Gerhard Elsner' of the station Lauterbach, and the 'Heinz Orth' of the station Freest, transported a total of 17 emergency personnel from the Freest-Kröslin and Lubmin volunteer fire departments, along with their equipment, to Greifswalder Oie. On board the 'Seeadler', the firefighters verified that the fire was indeed extinguished and would not flare up again. The shipping company operating the vessel sent a replacement ship to Greifswalder Oie to bring the passengers back to Peenemünde.
