Offshore ship refloated after 83 days
On Aug 6, the 'Skandi Amazonas' was successfully refloated, 83 days after running aground off the coast of Macaé, Rio de Janeiro, on May 15, when it struck a rocky outcrop near Pedra do Pescador while approaching the Port of Macaé. Further activities, including towing, environmental obligations and the vessel’s final disposition, were necessary, before the operation was formally concluded. The vessel was initially anchored in a sheltered anchorage off the coast for further reassurance of its stability and integrity, after which it was towed to a nearby shipyard. The master had intentionally beached the vessel in a controlled maneuver, allowing all crew members to evacuate safely and preventing any environmental impact. The refloating followed weeks of temporary hull repairs, dewatering, structural stabilisation and other recovery activities carried out under the supervision of the Brasilian Navy and the relevant environmental authorities. The owner DOF had previously declared the 'Skandi Amazonas' a Constructive Total Loss (CTL) after concluding that the cost of repairing the vessel would exceed its insured value. The company subsequently received a hull and machinery insurance settlement of approximately US$115 million.
Second DOF vessel arrived
On Aug 3, a second DOF vessel, the 'Skandi Ipanema' (IMO: 9528249), has arrived off the Praia Campista in Macaé, and positioned itself near the grounded 'Skandi Amazonas'. During the recent weeks, the salvage operation had focused on preparing the vessel for refloating, with technical inspections, installation of equipment and anchoring systems. Now the work entered a new phase. After the two ships were connected with a cable, the pumping of water, which had accumulated in the internal compartments of the 'Skandi Amazonas', began as a necessary step to reduce the vessel's weight and allow it to float again. This was expected to be completed by Aug 6, provided that the technical and meteorological conditions remained favourable. The vessel remained stable and under continuous monitoring. The operation was carried out in accordance with the approved salvage plan, with monitoring by the Macaé Port Authority to ensure navigational safety, safeguard human life at sea, and prevent water pollution. The Navy maintained a temporary exclusion zone around the ship and advised vessels and onlookers not to approach the site to avoid risks and interference with the salvage work. After being removed from the sandbank, the 'Skandi Amazonas' was to be towed to the vicinity of the Ilha de Santana to undergo technical inspections that will support its subsequent relocation to Rio de Janeiro. Offshore ship declared as CTL
DOF has declared the 'Skandi Amazonas' as a constructive total loss after the grounding outside Macaé. The hull damage and water ingress led the company to conclude rebuilding costs would exceed the ship’s insured value, triggering a $115m hull and machinery payout. Meanwhile the salvage work was going on with laying out anchors, patching the hull and dewatering the ship. On July 28, a towing connection to the shore was established to stabilise the ship during the refloating process.
