Damaged ferry back in port

Sat Apr 13 12:14:04 CEST 2019 Timsen

Shortly before 5 p.m. on April 12 the fully loaded "Skarven" entered the port of Svinö with own engine. Many of those who were evacuated after the grounding in the morning were on site to collect a total of 19 cars and working vehicles such as trucks and trailers or an excavator. The dive inspection in the afternoon had showed that the "Skarven" had suffered a several meter long breach at the port side three meters below the waterline after the contact with a blasted rock edge under water in the narrow of the Ekholms Sound. It was still unclear what led to the accident, whether it was a human failure or a technical error. On April 14 at 11 p.m. the ferry was docked at the Oy Western Shipyard Ltd. in Teijo for repairs. Ferry grounded in Ekholms Sound

Fri Apr 12 13:26:38 CEST 2019 Timsen

The "Skarven" ran aground in the Ekholms Sound in the Gulf of Bothnia on Apri,l 12, 2019, at 7.40 a.m. on the way to Degerby. The ferry got stuck in pos, 60° 1.97' N 020° 21.57' E. The hull was holed and started leaking oil. There were 25 passengers and six crew members on board, and there was no danger for them. Coastguard and surveillance craft from Långnäs and Degerby were called and took the passengers to shore. On scene were the SAR boat "Svante G", (MMSI: 230046580), the tug "Subsea VI" (MMSI: 230980160) and the "Rescue Bjoerkskaer" (MMSI: 230061400). There were taxis there to bring the passengers back either to Mariehamn or Degerby. The Traffic Safety Agency Trafi has also been alerted. The ship was refloated around noon. If possible it will head to Svinö with own power or otherwise be pulled by tugs. The cars aboard were to be unloaded in Svinö. Diver have inspected the "Skarven" and found several holes in two or three tanks of the ship.
