Shadow tanker seized

U.S. forces have seized the 'Skywave', which was allegedly involved in transporting Iranian crude through Tehran’s shadow oil network, on the night of May 18. The vessel had already been sanctioned by the United States in March over accusations that it was helping move Iranian oil exports despite ongoing sanctions pressure against Tehran. The tanker had likely loaded more than 1 million barrels of crude from the Kharg Island terminal, before operating through areas of the Indian Ocean commonly associated with covert ship-to-ship oil transfers.

Tanker transited Strait of Hormuz

The latest crossings of the Strait of Hormuz included the 'Skywave' and the 'Wen Yao' on March 13, 2026. The 'Wen Yao' appeared to have been the first sanctioned vessel to have transited the Strait without turning off its AIS, while still deep within the Gulf, diverging from the typical concealment practices often associated with shadow fleet activities.
