Military ferry damaged again by Ukraine
A Ukrainian drone attack damaged the 'Slayvanin' and killed one person in the port of Kavkaz in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region on June 21. The attack significantly damaged the “Slavianin” which was the last railway ferry the Russian occupiers had been using for military purposes in the region to transport railway cars, vehicles, and containers. Last railway ferry knocked out by drone attack
Ukraine’s military intelligence reported that the 'Slayvanin', which was used to supply temporary occupied Crimea, was disabled and caught fire in a drone strike, marking the loss of the last such vessel operating in the Kerch Strait on the night of April 5-6. Special units from its Department of Active Operations carried out the nighttime attack- The vessel was “put out of operation” following the strike. The ferry had already been targeted in the night of March 13. At that time, the Ukrainian forces had also struck another Russian railway ferry, the 'Avangard', which was subsequently disabled. The 'Slayvanin' was disabled and had to be sent for repairs. With the 'Slavyanin' out of operation, Russia may shift greater reliance to the Kerch Bridge or overland supply routes through occupied territories. These alternatives face ongoing risk from Ukrainian strikes. Efforts to restore maritime ferry capacity would require secure conditions and time, potentially offering Ukraine further opportunities to disrupt supplies. The attack on the 'Slavyanin' occurred alongside other Ukrainian operations against Russian logistics hubs and military sites. On April 8, Ukrainian drones struck oil depots in Feodosia and Hvardiiske in occupied Crimea, causing fires, and targeted port infrastructure in Russia’s Krasnodar region. Additional attacks hit an airfield in Adygea and sites in occupied Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk, Donetsk, and Crimea, including warehouses, missile systems, and intelligence facilities. The Kerch Strait has been a critical corridor for sustaining Russian forces in occupied territories, particularly amid ongoing pressure on land-based supply lines. Railway ferries have been used to move heavy cargo, including armored vehicles and bulk fuel, between mainland Russia and Crimea. Ukrainian drones also struck Russia’s Black Sea Fleet frigate 'Admiral Essen' in the port of Novorossiysk on April 6, marking the second hit on the vessel within a month. An analysis of imagery and satellite data suggested the strike damaged the ship’s bow section near its naval gun and sonar system, potentially affecting its anti-submarine capabilities while leaving its Kalibr missile launch systems intact. Two ferries damaged in attack on Russian port Kavkaz
The Ukrainian military intelligence service HUR claimed to have attacked and damaged two ships used by the Russian military on March 14, 2026. The "Slavyanin" was disabled, and the "Avangard" was damaged at sea. Both ships were primarily used for shuttle services between the Russian mainland and the Crimean Peninsula, which Moscow temporarily annexed in 2014. They transported weapons, military equipment, and ammunition. The ships were fired upon in an attack on the Black Sea port of Port Kavkaz. The port's infrastructure was also damaged in the attack. Images released by HUR suggest a drone attack. Earlier that morning, Russian authorities had acknowledged damage to the port and one of the ships, without providing further details. Three people were injured in the attack. The Ukraine also attacked the port of Kavkaz, the rail and car ferry terminal in Krasnodar on the Russia mainland. Kavkaz has been hit before, as has the 'Avangard', which was already struck at its berth using ATACMS rockets in 2024.
