Trawler sank in Castletownbere
On Oct 29, 2025, at 8:47 p.m. the Castletownbere Coast Guard was tasked to an incident in Castletownbere harbour, after the 'Stephanie', with four crew members on board, en route from Dinish Wharf to the port, hit a post and was breached. The volunteer crew of the Castletownbere Lifeboat 17-44 (MMSI: 235010876), which was just returning from a routine training exercise and was in the process of tying up theboat, received a mayday call at 8.45pm. The lifeboat immediately launched again and made its way the short distance, arriving on scene in two minutes. The crew observed one person who had taken to a life raft, while the three others weree still onboard. All four were safely transferred to the lifeboat. The crew also put a pump onboard the trawler to deal with the ingress of water, but this was to no avail given the rapid intensity at which the water was coming in, and the boat sank within 15 minutes. All four fishermen were returned safely the short distance to Castletownbere Harbour. Ther conditions were very good in the harbour at the time of the incident.
