According to the municipality of Hiddensee, the ferry service Vitte – Wittower Fähre Süd, which was interrupted due to a damage to the ferry 'Vitte', was to be resumed on Jan 29, 2026, using the 'Swanti', as this route is considered more reliable than the one to Schaprode given the frost forecast. Departures from Vitte were scheduled at 7:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. From Wittower Fähre, the "Swanti" was to depart at 9:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 4:45 p.m. A bus connection for Hiddensee residents between Wittower Fähre and Schaprode has been organized and was free of charge exclusively for island residents. However, according to the Waterways and Shipping Authority, the "Swanti" is only permitted to transport passengers in emergencies, including urgent medical appointments. According to an expert report, the "Swanti" was now permitted to transport up to 20 people. This was announced to NDR by Heiko Miraß (SPD), State Secretary for Western Pomerania and Eastern Mecklenburg on Jan 29. Currently, the island is served three times daily.
