Taudre aground in Marlborough Sound
Five people were rescued from rocks after thr 'Taudre', enroute from Picton, ran aground at French Pass in the Marlborough Sounds on Dec 2, 2025, at around 11.30 p.m. Coastguard Nelson volunteers were battling strong currents to retrieve the crew and tow the disabled ship off, after the RCC of Maritime NZ was notified of the fishing vessel. One person had been thrown overboard, and all five on board managed to reach the rocks where they were safe, but very cold. Once the 'Sealord Hohapata Rescue', which had departed shortly after midnight, arrived on Dec 3 at around 2.30 .a.m-, the vessel had to battle French Pass’ notoriously strong currents to get into a position where the fishing vessel’s crew could be safely taken off the rocky shoreline The skipper and engineer were then placed back onto the fishing vessel along with a Coastguard volunteer to prepare it for towing. The 'Sealord Hohapata Rescue' then refloated the 'Taudre' at around 3 a.m. and took the vessel under tow to Croisilles Harbour for divers to assess any damage. The three crew members who had been on the 'Sealord Rescue' were then transferred back to their vessel, and the Coastguard volunteer returned to the rescue vessel, which was back at base a little before 1 p.m., making it a 12-hour rescue.
