Civilian seafarers killed in Russian attack on Tedy while towing Emil

Fri Sep 11 18:28:51 CEST 2026 Timsen

On the morning of Sep 9, 2026, a Russian drone attack was launched on the 'Tedy' off the coast of Odesa, while attempting to tow the bulk carrier 'Emil' (IMO: 9462483), which had been damaged in a drone attack on Aug 5, while it was sailing in the Black Sea, about 21 nautical miles from Odesa. There were ten people on board the tug, among them four Azerbaijani citizens, three Turkish citizens, two German citizens, and one Ukrainian citizen. Following the attack on the tug, it went alongside at port side of the bulk carrier, and the crew boarded the vessel using the pilot ladder, and waited there. They hoisted the white and also a Turkish flag, but the drones hit anyway. The Azerbaijani seafarers Aslan Aliyev and Asim Gasımov lost their lives in the attacks on the tug, while two more crew members, Imran Novruzov and Rauf Aliyev were injured. The injured seafarers were taken ashore received treatment in a hospital in Chornomorsk. Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry later confirmed the deaths and injuries. The ministry was in contact with Ukrainian authorities and diplomatic missions to assist the injured and arrange for the return of the bodies of those killed. The tug was hit again by two drones while heading towards the port city of Constanța on the early morning of Sep 10. Russia's defence ministry earlier had wrongly stated it had hit two dry cargo ships as they sailed to the nearby port of Odesa, delivering cargo for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and an escorting tug, on the evening of Sep 9.
