Attack in the Bab el-Mandeb Straitkilled four seafarers and two rescuers

Wed Aug 19 12:30:32 CEST 2026 Timsen

Four crew members, three Pakistanis and one Indonesian national, were killed after the 'Tiamahah' was attacked by a missile, which was was launched by the Houthis from east of Taiz, in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on Aug 11, 2026. The incident occurred while the ship was at anchor northeast of Perim Island. The ship had left the port of Mokha and switched off its AIS signal. Two rescuers from the National Resistance Forces (NRF), an anti-Houthi-affiliated group, were also killed when the Houthis attacked again after the rescue teams arrived. Ten people were injured, including seven crew members, two Coast Guard personnel, and one NRF member. The first strike, involving three ballistic missiles, had prompted rescue teams from the government-run Coast Guard, in co-operation with the armed forces, to evacuate crew members and take the wounded to hospital. Survivors described intense fire, panic and damage aboard the ship. During the rescue operation, Houthi rebels launched a second attack, involving one ballistic missile, which caused additional deaths and injuries. The death toll went up to six. They included four crew members, three Pakistanis and one Indonesian, and two Yemeni rescuers. Abkar Muhammad Mahmoud was one of the rescuers killed while performing his duties. Three hours after the ship was attacked with a ballistic missile, the Coast Guard thwarted yet another attempt by the Houthis. A “booby-trapped drone boat” tried to approach the 'Tihamah'. It was intercepted and destroyed by the armed forces and the Coast Guard. The fatal attack on the 'Tihamah' was the first by a Houthi strike since Middle East conflict was triggered by US-Israeli attacks on Iran at the end of February, one month after the Houthis declared a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea in response to what they described as a Saudi siege. Pakistan strongly condemned the Houthi attack on the vessel, noting that such attacks endanger human lives, violate international law and pose a serious threat to freedom of navigation, maritime security and the safety of commercial shipping in the Red Sea. Operator was not registered with the Egyptian Chambers of Navigation, ferry had no ties with Egypt

Thu Aug 13 12:40:14 CEST 2026 Timsen

The company Blue Sea for Management Marine, which operated the 'Tihama', was not registered with the Egyptian Chambers of Navigation, managed from its branch in Dubai, and did not hold a maritime agency license to operate as a maritime agency, issued by the Egyptian maritime transport and logistics sector, the Ministry of Transport reiterated on Aug 13, reacting to reports which were alleging a link between Egypt and the vessel. Some publications claimed, in particular, that the address of the company operating the ship was located in Alexandria. The ministry specified that the 'Tihama' was flying the Tansanian flag and that its owner was of Yemeni nationality. The ministry also denied any operational link between the ship and Egypt, stating that the Tihama never entered an Egyptian port, was not heading towards Egypt, and was not carrying any cargo belonging to Egyptians. Egyptian authorities also reaffirmed their vigilance regarding events affecting the country’s territorial waters, as well as the security and safety of the Mediterranean and Red Seas. The ministry called on Arab and international media outlets, as well as foreign correspondents, to exercise accuracy in their coverage of Egyptian affairs, after noting the dissemination of information deemed erroneous or inaccurate. The attack had resulted in at least six deaths and several injuries among the crew members and those involved in the rescue operations. The attack, attributed to the Houthis, had fueled rumors in some media about a possible link with Egypt. The vessel was licensed to transport passengers between Aden, Djibouti, Somalia and Socotra on round trips. Arsenio Dominguez, secretary general of the International Maritime Organisation, stressed the necessity of protecting seafarers' lives. In a statement offering his condolences to the families of the victims, Mr Dominguez described the attack on the Tihamah as “troublesome”.
