Grounding near St-Ours Island

Wed Jul 22 12:23:47 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Onego Otra' ran aground on June 30, 2026, at around 4:40 p.m. on the St. Lawrence River, near the Île Saint-Ours in Contrecoeur in pos. 45° 55' N 073° 13' W. It had departed from Montreal enroute to New Orleans at around 3:00 p.m. Almost two weeks after the incident, lightering operations began using the vessel's own cranes on June 11. The Canadian tugs "Ocean Sea Hawk" (MMSI: 316027937) and "Ocean Surf Scoter" (MMSI: 316022597) were deployed for the barge transport. The pilot boat "Ocean Champlain II" (IMO: 8684644) made several trips between Sorel, Quebec, and the "Onego Otra."According to the Canadian Coast Guard, a rudder problem was the cause of the grounding. There was no pollution, and the Coast Guard remained on scene to ensure that the salvage operations were carried out safely. There was an exclusion zone established around the vessel. Drone flights were not permitted within two nautical miles, and up to 2000 feet. Pleasure craft had to maintain a distance of 250 metres. A first salvage attempt on July 14 by four tugs of the Ocean Group was aborted after about eight hours. The ship could not be moved and remained in the same position as of July 22.
