Russian tanker aborted supply voyage to Cuba
The 'Universal' has apparently abandoned its voyage to Cuba and was now sailing southeast. The tanker ad previously waited for weeks in the Sargasso Sea after interrupting its voyage. The tanker had loaded approximately 300,000 barrels of fuel in a Russian port. The tanker's destination was Cuba until MAy 26. The designation has since been changed to "for order", awaiting further instructions. The reason for this change was not immediately clear. The last oil shipment arrived in a Cuban port at the end of March aboard the Russian tanker "Anatoly Kolodkin", which had delivered 100,000 tons of oil. Russia announced in April that it was preparing a second shipment.
Tanker adrift in Atlantic without destination
The 'Universal', sanctioned by the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom, has been adrift in the Atlantic Ocean since mid-April, approximately 1,600 kilometers off the coast of Cuba with nearly 270,000 barrels of diesel fuel on board. The vessel, owned by the Russian state-owned shipping company Sovcomflot, had departed from Vysotsk in early April and crossed the English Channel on the April 9,, escorted by a Russian frigate. Its arrival in Cuba was scheduled for the end of April, but it abandoned the voyage without registering a destination in its AIS. Since April 14, the ship's behaviour has become erratic. On April 27, the 'Universal' was navigating northwest at a speed of 3.4 knots, having deviated from a direct route to the Caribbean and was 3,175 kilometers from Havana. On April 29, the ship had partially corrected its course to west-southwest and was sailing at only 2.2 knots, but still hadn't declared a destination. The uncertainty surrounding its arrival follows a familiar pattern. Several ships have altered their course toward Cuba for fear of being intercepted by U.S. naval forces. The only ship able to deliver oil to Cuba in 2026 was the' Anatoly Kolodkin', which arrived in the port of Matanzas on March 31 ith 730,000 barrels of crude oil.
Universal may be next tanker to deliver oil to Cuba
The 'Universal', transiting through the North Atlantic westwards toward the Caribbean, loaded with Ural crude, about sailing 15 days from Cuba, could be the promised second tanker that Russia was sending to Havana as humanitarian aid to alleviate the serious effects of the U.S. energy blockade. The tanker is sanctioned from the United States and the European Union. It has no declared final destination. The ship belongs to the Russian shipping company Sovcomflot, like the one that carried the first shipment from Moscow to Cuba, and departed from Vystotsk. On April 8, 2026, it transited the English Channel, escorted by a Russian frigate to avoid problems with British authorities. On March 31, the Russian tanker 'Anatoly Kolodkin' had in Cuba with 730,000 barrels of oil. It was the first oil shipment to reach the island in the last three months following the blockade imposed by the USA. The previous tanker to enter Cuba with crude oil from abroad, at least officially, was the 'Ocean Mariner', a smaller tanker flying the Liberian flag, which arrived from Mexico with 86,000 barrels oil on Jan 9.
