Pollution incident during cleaning works
A marine pollution incident was recorded on Aug 13, 2026, at the oil terminal of the Tunisian Refining Industries Company (STIR) in Zarzouna, in the Bizerte Governorate. A quantity of carbonate powder spilled into the water from the 'Velos Rubini'. The substance originated from the engine cooling lines of the ship, which was moored at the terminal. The spill occurred during cleaning operations on the ship's funnel carried out by its crew. In response to the incident, STIR's internal operational plan was immediately activated. The various agencies involved in maritime incident management were mobilised, including the Maritime Guard, security authorities, the Merchant Marine, and regional authorities. The area around the vessel was completely sealed off to limit the spread of the substance into the marine environment. Recovery and cleanup operations were then initiated. A sample of the spilled material was taken by STIR (Société des Transports et d'Industrie du Raffinage) and submitted for the necessary analyses. The results confirmed that it was indeed a carbonaceous powder and not a petroleum product. The Environmental Protection Agency filed a report against the ship's captain for marine pollution. The authorities also indicated that the necessary legal measures would be taken against the ship's crew.
