Starter battery for auxiliary engine exploded

On Aug 3, 2026, the starter battery for the auxiliary engine two exploded on board the 'Vikingen' which had been operating as a reserve ferry between Sandnessjøen and Dønna at that time. The ship has remained sidelined at the Sandnesvågen in the port of Sandnessjøen since.

Ferry sidelined in Sandnessjøen with technical problems

The 'Vikingen', operating on the Sandnessjøen - Bjørn (Dønna) - Løkta route, had to cancel the service on the B-route on Sep 10, 2025, until further notice due to technical problems. The ferry was sidelined in Sandnessjøen for troubleshooting.

Ferry towed to port after engine trouble

In the afternoon of Nov 26, 2016, the "Vikingen", enroute from Ranavik to Skjersholmane, suffered engine trouble on the Bømla Fjord. The main engine had to be turned off after several alarms were raised, and the ship went adrift off Eldøyane in favourable weather conditions for a while before getting tug assistance. At 3.15 p.m. the ferry was towed into the port of Skjersholmane where passengers and cars could be disembarked before the ship was taken to a repair yard.
