Lengthy repairs completed
The 'Vincent Coleman', operating between Alderney Landing and downtown Halifax, has returned to service on May 19 following repairs at 10:15 a.m., allowing the service between downtown Dartmouth, N.S., and the Halifax waterfront to operate on its usual schedule -- every 15 minutes from 7 a.m. to 8:15 p.m. on weekdays again. The ferrywas taken out of service in January because of a steering issue that required specialised replacement parts and was re-commissioned following testing and sea trials. The ferry service had been operating on a 30-minute schedule while the 'Vincent Coleman' was undergoing repairs. Meanwhile, the 'Craig Blake' remained out of service due to a significant repair.
Repairs of steering system delayed
The 'Vincent Colement' which had to be removed of service in Jan 2025, because of an issue with the steering system, and commenced repairs in Halifax, being supposed to return to service at the end of March, suffered a snag in the repair process, which was delaying the return. Until further notice, the ferry 'Alderney' continued running every half an hour. The city has ordered special replacement parts, which took some time to arrive, but once they had them, more technical difficulties arose and needed more parts, which compounded the delay. Halifax Transit continued to work closely with the international supplier to secure the necessary parts, and the 'Vincent Coleman' was to return to service once the required repairs have been completed.
Passenger who fell over board rescued by engineer
A 31-year-old fell overboardthe "Vincent Coleman" in the late afternoon of Nov 27, 2019. The ferry was underway from Halifax to the Alderney Landing ferry terminal, and was about halfway across the harbour, when the man fell over a railing around 5:30 p.m. The vessel stopped immediately so they could make a rescue attempt. The ferry engineer jumped into the water to rescue the passenger. Meanwhile, crew members used a life net to pull him out of the water and back onto the ferry. The passenger was in the water for about five minutes. The man wasn’t seriously injured, but was taken to hospital as a precaution. Police was investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, but they believed alcohol may have been a factor.
