Tanker allided with bridge

In Izegem, West Flanders, the 'Voluntas', enroute from Voeselare, allided with the Centre Bridge over the Roeselare-Leie Canal, which connects the centre of Izegem with the sub-municipality of Emelgem, on the morning of Nov 7, 2026, at 10.15 a.m. The ship's wheelhouse was completely destroyed. The skipper managed to escape just in time by jumping from the cabin, though he sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital by ambulance. Shortly before, the vessel had unloaded a cargo of heating oil in Roeselare. As a result, it was carrying less weight and sat higher in the water. The skipper realised too late that the ship would not fit under the bridge and was unable to avoid the allision. Following the accident, another crew member was able to maneuver the ship a significant distance in reverse. Eventually, another cargo vessel assisted by pushing it towards the bank, allowing the ship to dock at the South Quay.
