Severely decomposed bodies discovered in tanker wreck

Sun Nov 08 21:36:46 CET 2026 Timsen

Severely decomposed human remains have been discovered on board the ' Wine Trader'. The discovery was made during an inspection of the wreck, which was being assessed for repairs at the port of Varna. When the tanker was attacked near the port of Sulina, on Oct 15, there were 12 crew members on board. Five sailors were rescued, while seven others went missing following the attack. The Bulgarian authorities have initiated DNA testing procedures to identify the victims.

SAR operation continued without result

Mon Oct 19 18:27:45 CEST 2026 Timsen

On the morning of Oct 16, Romanian authorities resumed the SAR operations for seven crew members of the 'Wine Trader'. A Black Hawk helicopter and a specialised response vessel participated in the operation, conducting reconnaissance flights and inspections of the ship and the surrounding area in an effort to locate the missing sailors. Among the seven sailors was one citizen of the Russian Federation. The other six crew members were citizens of Benin. The search for them was complicated by poor weather conditions and high waves. The plan called for a team of four aboard a helicopter to board the ship and resume the search for the missing individuals. The helicopter team was also going to do a reconnaissance flyover. The patrol boat 'Fifi Mai 0101', which participated in the rescue, returned to the location with 13 rescuers aboard. They were going to conduct reconnaissance in the area and also planned to board the vessel.

Seven seafarers missing after drones hit chemical tanker

Mon Oct 19 18:24:51 CEST 2026 Timsen

Maritime rescue teams have been deployed to respond to a fire, which was reported aboard the 'Wine Trader', which was located at an anchorage approximately 14 nautical miles southeast of Sulina, on Oct 15, 2026, at 06:580 a.m., with 12 crew members on board. The last transmitted position was 45° 01' N 029° 60' E. Several drones had entered Romanian territory before. After the tanker was struck, the crew was attempting to fight a fire. The first strike occurred in the area of the accommodation block and left several crew members unaccounted for and made a search difficult due to the intensity of the fire. Later the captain reported the vessel was struck a second and possibly a third time. Damage to the water supply for the firefighting system forced them to suspend the efforts and evacuate. The ship showed typical signs of drone impacts such as a partially burnt out superstructure, destroyed wheelhouse and damaged deck cranes. At 7.10 a.m., the SAR vessel 'Apollo' of the Romanian Agency for the Saving of Human Life at Sea (ARSVOM), headed to the ship to rescue the crew. A Black Hawk helicopter of the General Aviation Inspectorate was deployed too. The situation was complicated by rough seas and high waves. A helicopter hoisted the injured crew members from the deck of the 'Wine Trader'. Initial reports said there were four survivors, but the helicopter reported locating a fifth survivor. One person had suffered scalp burns, and another had mild smoke inhalation.  A second helicopter team was dispatched to the vessel and was planning to board it to search for possible additional survivors. Seven crewmembers were listed as missing. The nationalities of the crew were reported as Beninese, Croatian, and Bosnian. The SAR operation was ongoing. The 'Apollo' returned to Sulina at 2.20 p.m. Reports with photos and video: https://www.aol.co.uk/articles/seven-sailors-missing-drones-strike-165741000.html https://ziarulamprenta.ro/stirile-zilei/foto-imagini-cu-nava-avariata-in-marea-neagra-aproape-de-sulina-sar-apollo-de-la-arsvom-participa-la-misiunea-de-salvare/594368/ https://maritime-executive.com/article/nato-discusses-black-sea-after-more-vessel-strikes-leave-seven-crew-missing https://www.maritime.bg/156372/?fbclid=IwT01FWAVDI1xleHRuA2FlbQIxMABwZG9mBXNydGMGYXBwX2lkDDM1MDY4NTUzMTcyOAABHqnQgI267gehmTU6OoZUEooNY1McQrUCOm-7_YyukhWKwsJF2A6YhJpLcKyz_aem_S4X0RDZdioZI7jASf2r8Jw
