Tug released and underway again

Tue Jun 30 12:27:33 CEST 2026 Timsen

Laid up in Brest for 6,5 months, the 'World-Trader' was released by the authorities and left the port on June 30 at 6.30 a.m. The arrival of new crew members for the tug about ten days agohad raised hopes for the vessel's imminent departure. This departure was contingent upon the decision of the Brest Ship Safety Center, which came aboard nearly two weeks ago. Following an inspection, the inspectors deemed the vessel safe to set sail again, and it cast off the west quay of the 5th basin in the commercial port. The tug's destination has changed; after Casablanca, Morocco, the port of Setúbal was now expected to be the next stop, if the 58-year-old ship doesn't encounter any further problems. Unseaworthy tug now registered in Zanzibar

Tue Jun 09 12:16:12 CEST 2026 Timsen

It has been six months since the 'World Trader' was moored at the west quay of the fifth basin in the Port of Brest on Dec 8, 2025. The situation of the vessel, which is in poor condition, has not changed, and two sailors were still on board. After Belize and Tanzania, a new country has just appeared on the stern of the tug, which has now been registered in Zanzibar for a few days. When the tug had suffered a propulsion failure, while transiting between Calais and Casablanca, it was clearly no longer seaworthy, as incidents had multiplied during the Channel crossing. Since then, the captain and some of the crew have left the ship and returned to their home countries. Two Ukrainians left in December, followed by two Venezuelans. These sailors were fortunate enough to receive their wages thanks to the intervention of Laure Tallonneau, an inspector with the ITF (International Transport Workers' Federation), who exerted constant pressure on the ship's owner. Derelict tug getting a danger for the port of Brest

Thu Mar 19 13:37:19 CET 2026 Timsen

Regarding the 'World Trader', which was towed to Brest and remained docked at the West Quay of the 5th basin, the situation remained criticak. On the afternoon of March 18, 2026, an inspector of the International Transport Federation observed that the generator had stopped working. He also noted that the chief engineer had left the ship, that there were no longer any sailors on board, and that the shipowner's representative was nowhere to be found. Following this observation, he informed BrestPort of the situation, as an unregistered vessel with no one on board, was a danger. A new crew could arrive in a few days. The Mor Glaz Association demanded an explanation from the relevant authorities and reiterated its call to put an end to the situation and have the ship revoked. Laid up for three years in the Netherlands under the name 'World Tug 1', the 55 year old tug was purchased by Zodiacofuscante LDA, a ship management company based in Portugal. Registered in Belize, and renamed 'World Trader', its crew consisted of a Spanish captain along with five Venezuelan and two Ukrainian sailors.
