Sustainable yacht sank following fire
The sustainable yacht 'Ya' has sunk in Indonesia following a fire. The skipper Peter Hoefnagels has been admitted to the hospital with burns. At the time of the accident, the yacht and its crew were just south of Singapore, near Bantam. Nothing was yet known about the cause of the fire. The Sustainable Yacht did not use fossil fuels. LFP batteries were on board for the systems and propulsion. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) is regarded as a relatively safe battery technology. Although LFP works with lithium, it does not carry the risk of the lithium batteries commonly used in cars containing nickel, manganese, and/or cobalt. The boat had already sailed around the world once under the name Sustainable Yacht, and was currently undertaking a second circumnavigation under the title 'Fossil Free around the World': https://fossilfreearoundtheworld.org/the-yacht-2/
