Injured crew members doing well - ship refloated
Of the two crew members who were sent to hospital after the accident on the 'Yngve', one was quickly discharged. The other was receiving treatment and was doing well under the circumstances. The operator Finnsnes Dykk & Anleggservice (FDA) thanked all emergency services and partners involved for their quick response and assistance. The 'Yngve', which was in a mooring operation at a fish farm at the far end of Kaldfjord on Kvaløya in the Tromsø municipality, was now lying flooded on the edge of the fjord, where it was secured with ropes and wires. The water ingress had led to a short circuit in electrical components in the engine room. Data did not show an abnormally high temperature prior to the short circuit. On board the hybrid “Yngve” was a battery pack from Zem Energy of 594 kilowatt hours, which may not have contact with water. The following explosion did not blow a hole into the hull. The vessel was evacuated according to current procedure, and the crew’s safety was ensured. As the amount of water in the engine room increased, the batteries were exposed to water over time. As a result, smoke was produced. The cause of the water ingress in the starboard engine room of the boat has not yet been clarified. Tromsø Assistanse is working to secure the vessel and prevent it from tipping over. The company's employees on site were working to get water out of the ship on May 28. The 'Yngve' was pumped out and towed to the quay in Kaldfjord by the 'FDA Niklas' on May 30, where a thorough inspetion was to be carried out before more about the cause of the incident could be said. Boat still smoking day after explosion
The 'Yngve' was pulled ashore in Rogndalen, a few kilometers north of Blåmannsvika, northwest of Tromsø, on May 28 at around 3 a.m. The boat was lying on the shore, being secured by a wheel loader and with wires and ropes. Since then, work has been ongoing both night and day to pump the water out of the vessel. The company Tromsø Assistanse was assigned with this task. There was still some smoke coming from the vessel, and it was not yet stable. The smoke was coming from the starter motor of the diesel generator 2. Because of the smoke development, a safety zone of 300 meters was established around the boat. The rising tide made the situation more demanding, and a rescue vehicle has been requested to further secure the ship. The County Road 7768 was closed at Småbakkan while the salvage work was underway. The cause of the explosion was still unknown, and the Accident Investigation Board was conducting an initial investigation. Hybrid tug unaccessable after explosion and fire
The "Yngve", with three people on board, suffered an explosion in the Kaldfjord outside Kvaløya in the Tromsø municipality on May 26, 2026, causing a fire and water ingress at around 3.30 p.m. The accident happened, while a couple of the crew were down to dwwater the bilge. Two crew members were injured. One has been sent to hospital with minor injuries, the other was quickly discharged. The cause of the explosion was unknown. Firefighters and rescue workers attended, but they could not approach the tug, which was listing to starboard side, because of the smoke develpment. They used thermal cameras to monitor the temperature, and it seemed to be dropping. However, the 'Yngve' is a hybrid vessel, and if the batteries caught fire, it could be very dangerous. The freighter 'Sjøvaag' diverted to the scene and was expected to be on site at 8:00 p.m. The police have also responded and a drone in the air to get an overview. The salvage operation was handled by the Norwegian Coastal Administration and the ship owner, the Finnsnes Dykk og Anleggservice AS. At 9:29 p.m., there was no longer any smoke visible from the vessel. The Norwegian Coastal Administration expected the ship to stay, and that there was little risk of spills. Their environmental emergency response was to clarify with the shipping company of the 'Yngve' how they would deal with the casualty. However, on the morning of May 27, one of the two hulls of the ship had flooded, and the ship was semi-submerged. The tug was on assignment at the Rogndalen site since 8.30 a.m., which is operated by Sjurelv Fiskeoppdrett. The site, across the fjord from Skulsfjord, has no road access.
