Cruise ship skipped port calls due to propulsion issues
The 'Zaandam' interrupted its Alaskan voyage, which had set off in Vancouver on June 3, 2026, due to a technical issue with one of its propulsion systems, resulting in the cancellation of its scheduled port calls. The problem, detected while the ship was in Juneau, Alaska, limited its speed and prevented it from adhering to its planned itinerary. The vessel remained docked in the Port of Juneau overnight on June 5, instead of departing as planned. Repairs continued while the ship was in port, and although the issue did not affect the safety of passengers or crew, it significantly reduced the ship's ability to cruise at normal speed. The passengers were informed that the ship would not be able to continue to its remaining Alaskan destinations. After temporarily leaving the harbour area to accommodate cruise ship traffic, the 'Zaandam' remained near Juneau before returning to pick up passengers who had opted to spend more time ashore. The ship then began its return voyage to the Port of Vancouver, proceeding southbound through Southeast Alaska while the situation continued to be assessed. As part of the revised itinerary, scheduled visits to Skagway, Glacier Bay, and Ketchikan were cancelled. Passengers participating in cruises embarking in Skagway were transferred to Juneau to embark. To compensate passengers for the reduced itinerary, Holland America Line offered a refund equivalent to 50% of the base cruise fare, along with a credit toward a future cruise worth 50% of the base fare.
Medevac off Oahu
The US Coast Guard medevaced an ailing man from the 'Zaandam' about 50 nautical miles off Oahu on Nov 26, 2024. Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu watchstanders received a notification on Nov 25 at 10 a.m. from the senior doctor aboard the cruise ship, requesting a medevac for a 32-year-old man experiencing symptoms of a stroke, while the ship was saling approximately 330 nautical miles northeast of Oahu. Watchstanders consulted with the duty flight surgeon, who recommended a medevac. On Nov 26 at 3:15 a.m., an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and an HC-130 Hercules airplane from the Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point rendezvoused with the 'Zaandam' about 50 nautical miles east of Kaneohe. The helicopter crew hoisted the patient and a nurse from the 'Zaandam' in order to provide in-flight care. The helicopter then transported the man to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu in stable condition.
