Tanker awaiting salvage

Wed Jul 08 20:04:16 CEST 2026 Timsen

The abandoned 'Al Rekayyat' remained adrift after the attack in the Strait of Hormuz as of July 8. The LNG stored in the tanker’s tanks remained intact and there was no breach of the cargo tanks. It was assessed that as long as the vessel was not subject to any further attack, it was likely to remain in its current state and not explode. Breaching a main tank would be catastrophic. Two vessels, a tug and a service ship , were currently near the tanker, which is located near the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz and close to Oman’s coast.

Tankers attacked in Strait of Hormuz

Wed Jul 08 18:39:33 CEST 2026 Timsen

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacked three tankers on July 6/7, 2026, one of them being the 'Al Rekayyat', another the Saudi Arabian tanker 'Wedyan', and the third the 'Cyprus Prosperity' on July 7 at 1.05 p.m. All tankers were attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz by unknown projectiles. The ships were near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz when they were attacked. A number of missiles were fired at the vessels, which were transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Organisation (UKMTO) reported that on July 6 at 9:19 p.m. UTC the LNG tanker, while sailing approximately eight nautical miles off Limah, was struck on its port side by an unidentified projectile, triggering a fire in the engine room. "Mayday mayday mayday. This is vessel Al Rekayyat, LNG vessel Al Rekayyat. We are being hit by drone on port side, top of engine room," the captain of the ' Al Rakayyat' said in a radio call, adding: "Status: engine room fire and full of smoke. Unable to assess further damage." Before the attack, the IRGC had issued radio warnings to the vessels, stating: “Our missiles and drones are ready to fire at you,” according to a recording from one of the ships. The vessel was timewise at risk of exploding due to the fire in its engine room. The crew was safe and evacuated and the fire later extinguished. It was the first time an LNG ship from Qatar, a mediator in talks between Washington and Tehran, has been struck since the start of the Iran war at the end of February. The 'Al Rekayyat' was owned and managed by Nakilat, also known as Qatar Gas Transport Company Ltd, which operates one of the world’s largest LNG shipping fleets. The vessel last transmitted its location on June 18, indicating its AIS tracking transponder was switched off. The 'Wedyan' was owned and managed by Saudi shipping firm Bahri. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said Tehran bore full legal responsibility for the attack on the LNG tanker. In a separate incident, the LPG tanker 'Al Maryah' was ordered by Iranian forces to change its course and sail closer to Iran’s coast after attempting to transit the strait via Omani waters on July 7.
