Allision in Oldenburg
On Feb 24, 2026, at approximately 2:10 a.m., an allision occurred between the 'Altair', enroute from Meppen to Bremen, loaded with ballast water, and the Oldenburg railway bridge. While passing under the bridge, the roof of the vessel's wheelhouse grazed the underside of the bridge, causing damage to the wheelhouse. The captain, however, did not report the incident to the Oldenburg Cooperative Control Center (KGO) until 8:22 a.m. The railway's emergency management team was immediately informed and promptly closed and inspected the bridge. The incident had gone unnoticed until the captain reported it. No damage was caused to the bridge, and after a disruption of approximately 45 minutes, it was reopened to train traffic. The investigation by the Brake Water Police was ongoing. The 'Altair' left Oldenburg again on Feb 26, destined to the port of Bremen. Only on Sep 30, 2025, the 'Altair', en route from Sachsenhagen to Hanover, had allided with a bridge on the Osnabrück branch canal at kilometer 16,6. The wheelhouse, which was now damaged again, was destroyed in that accident. Report with photo: https://www.presseportal.de/blaulicht/pm/119277/6223079
Barge allided with bridge, master injured, wheelhouse crushed
The 'Altair', en route from Sachsenhagen via Osnabrück to Hanover, allided with a bridge on the Osnabrück branch canal at kilometer 16,6 on Sep 30, 2025, at 6.10 a.m. The wheelhouse was destroyed. The 43 year old skipper sustained minor injuries and suffered a shock. Because of the leg injury, emergency personnel called an ambulance for treatment. The other crew member on board remained uninjured. The Römeresch St., which connects the districts of Westerberg and Haste, was closed for insepctions by an engineer, causing significant traffic disruptions in the port area. After a few hours, the bridge was reopened to traffic. A water pipe on the bridge was damaged. A gas line, which also runs over the canal, remained undamaged. The bridge's structural integrity was not affected either. Experts from the city of Osnabrück and the municipal utility company were assessing the damage. Officers from the Minden Water Police Station recorded the accident, seized the vessel, and filed a maritime accident report. There was no evidence that the vessel's captain or his helmsman had consumed alcohol. The accident apparently happened due to a misjudgment by the vessel's master.
