Iran intercepted tanker in Strait of Hormuz

Wed Aug 19 20:49:21 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Amara', with an Indian crew on board, has reportedly been intercepted by Iranian forces (IRGC) in the Strait of Hormuz off Qeshm Island for non-compliance with transit permits and unpaid transit fees. The AIS was active along the designated coastal route. The AIS data showed the tanker interrupting its inbound transit south of Qeshm Island, slowing and carrying out unusual manoeuvres instead of continuing normally into the Persian Gulf. The unloaden ship was diverted towards the Iranian side and directed to Bandar Abbas. The registered ownership was linked to a Marshall Islands company, while technical management is handled by Dubai-based SuperFleet DMCC. Vessels seeking passage were expected to: • use Iran-designated routes • obtain Iranian authorization • and pay required maritime service fees Iranian reporting claimed the detained vessel had failed to follow the prescribed route and had not met the required payment conditions. While the tanker was operating south of Qeshm Island during its inbound movement, there was no complete public record showing exactly what instructions the vessel received, whether authorisation had been requested, whether a payment demand was formally presented to the master, or what communications took place before the tanker changed course. There was also no credible evidence at this stage that the ship was detained because it violated the U.S. blockade of Iran, carried sanctioned Iranian cargo, or was attempting to trade illegally with Bandar Abbas. Iran’s stated justification for stopping the tanker appears to be about its own Hormuz transit rules.
