Two officers died in confined space
Two Turkish ship officers serving on the "Amisos" lost their lives due to a lack of air while inspecting a confined space in the Mediterranean on July 20, 2026. The crew of the "Amisos"—which had departed from the port of Bremen bound for Turkey—contacted the Mazara del Vallo Port Authority to report a medical emergency on board. The ship anchored off the coast of Mazara to allow medical teams to board and assess the situation. However, Italian medical personnel who boarded the vessel confirmed that the two Turkish officers—2nd Officer Osman Mete Kuru and a 4th Officer whose identity has not yet been disclosed—had died. The bodies of the seafarers were brought ashore at Mazara del Vallo. According to preliminary findings, it was believed that the two Turkish seafarers lost their lives due to asphyxiation after entering a confined compartment during an inspection or maintenance task. The exact cause of death for the Turkish seafarers was to be determined following examinations by forensic experts, autopsy results, and technical inspections of the vessel. Following initial inspections in Mazara, the Marsala Public Prosecutor's Office decided to direct the ship to the Port of Trapani to facilitate a more effective investigation. After it docked at the Ronciglio pier in Trapani on July 22 at around 8 a.m., the vessel was placed under administrative custody and secured upon the instructions of the Prosecutor's Office and the Port Authority. Inspectors and maritime officials have commenced work to fully clarify the events aboard the ship and identify any potential negligence. Cargo Carried: Shredded Tires Meanwhile, it has been revealed that the cargo ship was transporting shredded or ground tires. Although inspectors have included this detail in the investigation file, there was currently no indication of a direct link between the cargo and the fatalities. Detailed technical inspections and document reviews were proceeding uninterrupted aboard the ship, which was held under the authority of judicial officials, to reconstruct the dynamics of the incident, verify compliance with safety procedures for entering confined spaces, and determine whether any negligence occurred.
