Damaged ship towed to Yalova
On June 8, the 'Ant', which was damaged in a Russian drone attack off the coast of Odessa on May 28, has been towed to Yalova by the tugs 'Haktan 1' (IMO: 9899648) and 'Kurtarma 7' (IMO: 9598608) for inspections, after passing through the Istanbul Strait under tow of tugs from the Directorate General of Coastal Safety. During the strait passage, the heavy damage on the ship, owned by Istanbul-based Maksimar Denizcilik, could be clearly seen. The convoy reached Altinova on June 13. After the technical inspection, which was to be carried out in a shipyard in Yalova, it will be assessed whether a repair was economically viable. If the repair cost turned out to be high, sending the ship for scrapping in Aliağa, Izmir, was among the options. Two Turkish crew members who were slightly injured in the attack, were meanwhile in good health, and their treatment was completed. Two civilians seafarers injured in Russian attack
The 'Ant' was attacked by a Russian drone off the port of Odesa, enroute to Turkish waters in loaden condition, on the early morning of May 29, 2026. A fire broke out in the accommodation block. Two crew members were injured. They were evacuted by the Ukrainian Navy and transported to a hospital for medical treatment. The fire was quickly brought under control thanks to the intervention of the Ukrainian Navy and the Maritime Search and Rescue Service, but parts of the superstructure and the wheelhouse were heavily damaged. The attack on the 'Ant' added to a series of Russian strikes against civilian maritime traffic and port infrastructure around the Odesa region, one of the key corridors for Ukrainian exports in the Black Sea. Russia has repeatedly attacked ports, terminals, warehouses, commercial vessels, and shipping lanes linked to the export of goods from Ukraine. In this context, civilian ships operating near Odesa continued to navigate under threat from drones, missiles, and long-range munitions.
