Two bulk carriers attacked by Russia - civilian swafarer killed
The bulk carrier 'Jincheng' (IMO: 9878838) was targeted by a Russian drone at the port of Chornomorsk on Oct 3, 2026. The accomodation block and bridge suffered severe damages. A fire broke out, but could be extinguished. One sailor died, and three other crew members were injured and had to be hospitalised. The sailor who was killed was an engineer in the engine compartment. 13 other crew members were evacuated from the vessel. Also the 'Antonia S', that had been docked at the port for about a month, was subjected to three Russian drone attacks targeting its hull. No injuries were reported among the crew of the bulk carrier, and rescue teams were able to quickly extinguish a fire on board of this ship too. "This is yet another deliberate attack by Russia on civilian shipping. Russia continues to terroris the peaceful merchant fleet and sailors who risk their lives every day to ensure the operation of Ukrainian maritime routes", said the Sea Ports Authority. The attack came amid an international call for Russia to halt attacks on civilian ships in the Black Sea and allow the passage of grain exports.
Crew repatriated after attack in Chornomorsk
22 Filipino crew members of the 'Antonia S' returned safely to the Philippines on Aug 30, 2026, after being repatriated from Ukraine following a missile attack on the bulk carrier, which was struck by a missile on Aug 19, while it was berthed at Chornomorsk. The crew was evacuated to a designated shelter after the attack and remained safe, while arrangements were made for their temporary accommodation and eventual repatriation. They arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 aboard Turkish Airlines Flight TK084 and were welcomed by Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) officials, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) personnel, and the airport medical team. The returning seafarers also received financial assistance from the DMW AKSYON Fund under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s UPLIFT initiative. The seafarers underwent medical and psychological assessments arranged by their licensed manning agency to address their physical and psychosocial needs following the traumatic incident. The DMW also reminded manning agencies and their accredited principals to closely monitor the welfare of Filipino seafarers, observe safety precautions and comply with established protocols for vessels operating in high-risk areas.
