Arista already stuck since March
The ' Arista', about which the Iranian state media had reported on July 1, that it had run aground while using a "US-suggested route" in the Strait of Hormuz, has actually been stuck in this same spot since tje middle of March, north of Hormuz Island in Iran’s territorial waters since the middle of March. The ship had been traveling between Hormuz and Asaluyeh, when it got stuck, The ship was part of an operation managed by Iranian oil magnate Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, the son of the late senior Iranian security official Ali Shamkhani. The 'Arista' was sailing in 2025 as the Panama-flagged 'Gauja', which the U.S. Treasury included in sanctions targeting what it described as a network that had been “generating tens of billions of dollars in profit” for Iran’s ruling elite. On July 30, 2025, the U.S. Treasury linked the the 'Gauja' to a massive oil smuggling ring, run by Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, a son of Ali Shamkhani, who had been a top security adviser to the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The senior Shamkhani was killed in an airstrike at the start of the war along with Khamenei. The Treasury Department alleged the smuggling ring moved sanctioned Iranian and Russian oil and other goods to buyers around the world. After the sanctions were levied, the 'Gauja' changed its name to 'Arista' and began flying a Comoros flag, which was a false flag for the ship, used to disguise the vessel’s origins. Sanctioned ships in Iran’s so-called shadow fleet frequently use this practice. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had alleged on July 1 that a safe passage through the strait was only possible via Tehran-approved routes, calling any uncoordinated navigation “unacceptable” and “completely dangerous.”
Grounded in Strait of Hormuz
On July 1, 2026, the ' Arista', enroute from Kandla to Asaluyeh, allegedly ran aground in pos. 27° 08' N 056° 28' E, while it was operating outside its designated shipping lane in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the IRGC. In fact, the ship hasn't moved since more than three months. Iran has repeatedly asserted that it has the only route through the Strait and, in last week’s break with the ceasefire, launched drones at multiple ships sailing the route along the Omani coast. The vessel’s position was north of Hormuz Island, well north of the Iranian route near Lark Island. The allegation came, after the Oman corridor in the strait was established last week by Muscat in coordination with the International Maritime Organisation as an alternative to Iran's designated route south of Larak Island. Conflicting reports regarding container ship allegedly seized by Iran
The 'Arista', which was linked to the US company Arista by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was allegedly detained on June 6, 2026, in the Strait of Hormuz due to violations of laws and regulations during the transit through the waterway. Iran’s IRGC said that four oil tankers, allegedly instigated and directed by the US military, attempted to exit the Strait of Hormuz. One of the tankers was targeted and stopped, while three other vessels turned back. According to reports, the 'Arista' is a container ship under US sanctions and located north of Hormuz Island, at 27.12853, 56.462 since March 14, having arrived from the port of Damietta, with its navigational status being "grounded" in pos. 27° 08' N 056° 28' E.
