Wreck towed to Giresun
After the 'Aroyat' was towed to Giresun waters by a tug of the Giresun Port Operations and searched after having moored. While the body of the missing Turkish engineer Arkan Nika was recovered, the 2nd engineer Erkan Nika remained missing. Upon his family's application, the port authorities in the Novorossiysk region, the Coastguard, health institutions, and SAR units had also conducted a fruitless search operation at sea after the attack. The last AIS signal of the ship originated from Sep 24 near Sinop, bound from Poti to Novorossiysk, before it was targeted by three drones, which set the accomodation block and the bridge on fire on Sep 27. The wreck was towed by the 'Eren Enerji IV' (IMO: 1037270), assisted by tugs of the General Directorate of Coastal Safety to the dismantling facilities in Aliağa on Oct 30, after the necessary talks had been finished, and was beached on Nov 5 for recycling. Engineer still missing, wreck towed to Turkey
The 'Aroyat' was in in the vicinity of Novorossiysk, when it was struck on Sep 27. The vessel’s AIS signal showed its last port call in Poti, but it was unclear if it had loaded in Russia or was approaching the port. The aerial drone started a large fire in the accommodation block of the ship, which was disabled and towed back to Turkey. The ship was registered in Palau and has been operated for Turkish companies since 2022. The family of the vessel’s Turkish 2nd engineer posted online that he was missing and has not been heard from. They said he was not among the rescued crew members, but they held out hope he might be somewhere in Russia. They asked if anyone knew anything or has seen the engineer. Furthermore, they said the authorities were promising a complete search of the vessel after tje towage to Turkish waters. Turkish officials have protested to Ukraine on several occasions over the attacks on commercial vessels and the casualties among their seafarers. The 'Aroyat' had come to the aid of Ukraine in 2023. It was the first large bulk carrier to return to the port of Chornomorsk in September 2023, after the UN-sponsored humanitarian corridor had collapsed. Ship operators, starting with the 'Aroyat' and a much smaller ship, the 'Resilient Africa', were the first to brave the situation and send ships on Ukraine’s corridor to restore its exports.
