11th Turkish cargo ship damaged in Russan drone attack

Sun Aug 09 23:34:39 CEST 2026 Timsen

On the night of July 29, 2026, the 'Ata 2', owned by the Albatros Corporation, was struck by three drones in the Black Sea near Odesa, shortly after leaving the port of Chornomorsk Port with a cargo of corn. The ship had 13 crew members on board, among them 12 Azerbaijani citizens and one Turkish citizen. The ship was struck at the living quarters and the bridge, suffering serious damage. No crew members were injured. The ship had a backup control system operating in manual mode, and the crew continues to sail using that system. It reached the port of Sulina after the attack. From there, it sailed to Istanbul, and was directed to rhe Desan Yardgem United Shipyards in Tuzla for major repairs on Aug 7. It was at least the 11th Turkish or Turkish-linked vessel damaged since Russia's full-scale invasion, and the third alone in July, days after a a Russian drone attack killed Turkish sailor Savas Cakar aboard the 'Reyhan Sari'. The Turkish Maritime Federation branded the targeting of merchant ships "crimes against humanity."
