Two ferries damaged in attack on Russian port Kavkaz

Sat Mar 14 21:20:23 CET 2026 Timsen

The Ukrainian military intelligence service HUR claimed to have attacked and damaged two ships used by the Russian military on March 14, 2026. The "Slavyanin" was disabled, and the "Avangard" was damaged at sea. Both ships were primarily used for shuttle services between the Russian mainland and the Crimean Peninsula, which Moscow temporarily annexed in 2014. They transported weapons, military equipment, and ammunition. The ships were fired upon in an attack on the Black Sea port of Port Kavkaz. The port's infrastructure was also damaged in the attack. Images released by HUR suggest a drone attack. Earlier that morning, Russian authorities had acknowledged damage to the port and one of the ships, without providing further details. Three people were injured in the attack. The Ukraine also attacked the port of Kavkaz, the rail and car ferry terminal in Krasnodar on the Russia mainland. Kavkaz has been hit before, as has the 'Avangard', which was already struck at its berth using ATACMS rockets in 2024. Nuclear waste-laden ferry to call at Kavkaz port

Fri Dec 02 09:45:19 CET 2011 arnekiel

Freight rail ferry "Avangard" (owner "Anship") with nuclear wastes on board will arrive soon from Bulgaria at the port of Kavkaz, Environmental Watch on the North Caucasus reports. The information was obtained from local residents and has not yet been officially confirmed. The cargo will be transported by train from the port of Kavkaz to the town of Zheleznogorsk of Krasnodar Territory to a mining and chemical plant for processing. Two years ago the Russian Government had adopted a decree on radioactive waste transportation and disposal. Kavkaz among other ports was included in the list of ports transshipping nuclear materials and radioactive waste. The green activists say the port is not suitable for handling the cargo.
